Big Data Analytics for Service Operations Management
This two-day workshop will provide the state-of-the-art on the use of big data to improve service operations and will introduce several useful big data and machine learning techniques to help analysts, managers, and other stakeholders enhance operational performance.
Description
Big data is a major source of change in today’s world. Organisations are constantly collecting a variety of data, such as standard tables, text, pictures, and videos, of unprecedented sizes (millions or billions of records) and from various sources, with the aim to use such data to improve their operations or services and create competitive advantage. There is a collective assumption that if organisations can learn to harness big data, then their operational capabilities would be transformed. In this context, both academics and practitioners interested in operations management could benefit from the big data technology to enhance operational performance. This two-day workshop will provide the state-of-the-art on the use of big data to improve service operations and will introduce several useful big data and machine learning techniques to help analysts, managers, and other stakeholders enhance operational performance.
Analysts, managers, and other stakeholders who are responsible or interested in improving operational performance. In general, the audience can come from a variety of industries and sectors, such as, but not limited to: finance/banking, hospitals and health care systems, educational institutions, transportation, tourism, and hospitality, and so on. Topics will include:
Introduction to Service Operations Management (SOM): Make sense of SOM and the increasing need for improved operational performance.
Introduction to Big Data: Explore the concept of big data and its importance for SOM.
The Big Data Architecture: Understand the data formats; the transformation of data; real-time or near real-time processing and batch processing; scalability and scalable applications; fault tolerance; security and privacy principles, threats, and technologies; and technology selection, among others.
Machine Learning in a Nutshell: Understand the data at the abstract level and the concept of machine learning and what it consists of. Differentiate between supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning and their application to SOM.
Hands-on use cases with the relevant open datasets.
2023 Course goals and outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Understand the concept of big data analytics in view of SOM
Understand the concept of machine learning techniques in view of SOM
Use machine learning techniques with big data analytics to enhance the value proposition of SOM
Demonstrate the ability to apply analytics concepts to current issues in SOM
Practice with software such as IBM Modeler to work with several tools such as neural network, clustering, classifications and decision trees.
